Jeff Bezos’ plan: This is how Amazon will turn Naxos into the “smartest” island in the country

At the beginning of July 2021, the richest man in the world, Jeff Bezos, was enjoying his vacation in Antiparos with famous friends after their spouses. Together with its American founder Amazonthe largest online retailer of goods and services, included Philhellene actor Tom Hanks, CNN reporter Anderson Cooper, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg and Hollywood producer Barry Diller who called on the prime minister if he has time to “thrown away» from Paros where he was, on the neighboring Cycladic island, in order to have dinner together.

In fact, Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his wife Mareva Grabofki “flew” across the street and the evening passed with relaxed conversation about the Greek summer, the islands, the modern image of our country, global technological developments and plans to shoot new films in our country.

The idea that Jeff Bezos threw

During the discussion, Mr. Bezos pitches the idea to the prime minister. “How would you feel if we attempted to turn one of your cosmopolitan islands into a smart one? (s.b. “smart”); We would reduce its energy and environmental burden from the activity of residents and tourists, we would significantly upgrade the quality of life and turn it into a pole of attraction for digital nomads (i.e. people who have the ability to work from any part of the world such as e.g. writers, web designers, etc.)’. That night they entered the foundations for Amazon to implement its plan.

Test flights of drones to send medicine

The island that was chosen to turn into the current phase into smart island is Naxos which within the next months will begin to experience a different reality. They have already begun to test fly over the largest island of the Cyclades, with a permanent population of 7,000, drone-type unmanned aircraft that are expected to carry drugs and biological material quickly and safely in remote areas both in Naxos and other nearby islands (e.g. Amorgos, Schinoussa, Paros, Donoussa or Ios). If, for example, a patient needs urgent medical treatment, the drone will take off e.g. from the hospital and will be directed within minutes to the person’s home, even if it is located on a remote mountain. They are currently flying with manual control throughout the flight. In the next stage the operator will monitor the aircraft if it follows the predetermined route smoothly and after everything goes well, in the last stage any doctor or nurse will place the drugs or biological material on the drone (e.g. bottle of blood) and will give the order so that the precious cargo reaches its destination.

Provision of telemedicine services

At the same time in island advanced telemedicine services will be provided for residents and visitors. It will be possible to make diagnoses and assessments of the patient’s condition remotely, to give the required instructions, to have a systematic monitoring of people with chronic diseases without the need for the doctor to travel to remote areas, to be monitored in the same way patients with postoperative phase and in the distant future even more complex cases will be dealt with.

Unmanned aerial vehicles for the needs of the Coast Guard

In addition to the medical units, however, they will have drones and the port authorities of Naxos. Different types of unmanned aerial vehicles that will be equipped with modern cameras and transmitters. The Coast Guard – Hellenic Coast Guard of the region will send such a heavy military type drone of Greek manufacture, in events surrounding the island and at a distance of up to 12 kilometers (so certainly up to the coasts of Paros, Koufonissios, Keros, Schinoussa and Heraklia), even in extreme weather conditions. They have the ability to fly even if the wind gusts reach 12 Beaufort, which means that they surpass in specifications even the drones used by NATO in cases of surveillance. One can easily understand the usefulness of such devices in cases of maritime accidents. In just a few minutes the port authority has a full picture of the incident so as to subsequently send all the necessary means saving human lives.

Mobile app will indicate which boats to tie

Particular emphasis is expected to be placed on the port facilities of the island, which will have a state-of-the-art marina from a technological point of view to moor small boats, large yachts and beastly yachts. Through an application for mobile phones the captains of the boats before even approaching Naxos they will know at which point there is an available place to tiehow deep it is at each point, where any scopels may be, and what the marina’s amenities are (eg water, electricity, free internet, etc.).

Sensors for vehicle parking spaces

Accordingly, there will be sensors that will make it easier car parking on land. Through an Internet of Things type circuit (so called the communication network of many devices, cars as well as any object that integrates electronic means, software and connectivity to the Internet in order to exchange data) will be determined what are the positions for the disabled, for the Coast Guard, for the Hellenic Police, for the Fire Service and other agencies, as well as where residents and tourists can park. In fact, if someone parks their car, e.g. in a place for disabled people, the system will automatically inform the relevant authorities in order to impose the prescribed fine on the offender.

Emptying trash cans with notification

With the use of similar technology, the cleaning services of the municipality of Naxos will know when the waste bins are full in order for the waste trucks to go and empty them. Those in the know point out that we will see another Naxos very soon will be the beginning to multiply the smart islands in the coming years.

The Astypalaia experiment

We remind you that the first project to convert a Greek island into “smart” was held in Astypalaia but on a smaller scale and benefits. There, the existing vehicle fleet was replaced with electric cars, innovative on-demand mobility services were introduced and the use of Renewable Energy Sources such as wind and solar was promoted. In addition, the Hellenic Republic is committed to ensuring high-quality road infrastructure, excellent signage and sufficient traffic and weather data to guarantee safe, clean and inclusive transport.

This is expected to take us to next stage which is autonomous driving. By 2030 Astypalaia will have zero emissions as around 1,000 electric cars will replace cars with internal combustion engines. At the same time, the infrastructure for sufficient charging points will be implemented.

The natural beauty of Greece, its clean air and seas, its landscapes and biodiversity, are among the country’s greatest qualities. The protection of all of these, through sustainable development, is a necessary condition for Greece’s long-term prospects. Innovation and investment in new technologies are also central to this strategy which will gradually improve the quality of life for both residents and visitors.
