EFFET: EFET recalls chicken burger. Salmonella was found. Why was this meat preparation recalled? All developments at xristika.gr.

Frozen chicken burger is recalled from the market by the Unified Food Control Agency (EFET).

In particular, EFET, in particular the Regional Directorate of Central Macedonia, when carrying out controls, sampled a meat preparation with the following data:

Chicken burger 140 g. frozen, in a package weighing 1 Kg, with a freezing date of 08/06/2022, LOT:000-22-159-001 and consumption by 08/06/202. The product is produced by the meat products industry “HATZIGAVRIILIDIS THEMISTOKLIS SA, VIKRE”.

Following laboratory analyzes at the food testing and research laboratory of EFET Thessaloniki, the presence of the pathogenic microorganism Salmonella spp.

EFET has demanded the immediate recall of the entire specific batch of the product in question and the relevant controls are already underway.

Consumers who have purchased the above product are asked not to consume it.

EFET: Foods with hepatitis in supermarkets

A mixture of frozen fruits in which the presence of the hepatitis A virus was detected, is recalled from the market by the Unified Food Control Agency.

Specifically, EFET was informed through the Early Warning System for Food and Animal Feed (RASFF), about the distribution by the Belgian company “ARDO ARDOOIE NV” in the Greek market of a mixture of frozen fruits in which the presence of the hepatitis A virus was detected.

Following further investigation by EFET, the products involved are as follows:

a) the product with the trade name “ARDO FRUITBERRY MIX” and a best-by date preferably before 11/11/2024, in a 1 kg package, which was sold by the company “MART KAS & KARY ANONYMI EMPORIKI ETERIA SA”.

b) the product with the trade name “ARDO FRUITBERRY MIX” and a best-by date preferably before 11/05/2024, in a 2.5 kg package, which was distributed by the companies: i) “METRO SA” ii) “IOSIF MAKRIDAKIS SA” and iii) “GOGGAKIS SA”.

EFET requested the recall / withdrawal of the products in question, while the relevant checks are already underway.

At the same time, it calls on consumers who have purchased the above products not to consume them.

EFET: The ally of consumers

EFET was established by Law 2741/Government Gazette 199/28-09-1999. It is N.P.D.D. and is under the supervision of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food. The responsibilities of the Unified Food Control Body are:

It defines the quality standards that food offered for consumption and raw materials or additives intended to be added to food must meet in order to protect public health and avoid consumer deception.

It defines the standards and principles on which the study and implementation of healthy product production systems should be based, in accordance with existing legislation, by food businesses and the specifications for scientists who will deal with the installation of such systems in food businesses, as well as with the personnel who will work in the food quality control laboratories installed in the food businesses.

It defines or validates the rules of good hygienic practice in accordance with Regulation 852/2004 and any other relevant international rule and Community law and controls compliance with these rules.

Adherence to the rules of good hygienic practice is a prerequisite for the establishment and operation of any food business. In this context, it determines the sanitary conditions for the establishment and operation of food businesses and the measures that must be taken to ensure that food is safe and healthy.

It maintains a register of food businesses and determines the control programs carried out by its services or by other authorities and services.

It acts with its own organs or commissions other authorities or services, coordinates and directs controls at all stages after primary production, which includes, among others, harvesting, slaughter and milking, i.e. at the stages of preparation, processing, production, packaging, storage, transportation, distribution, handling, offering for sale or making available to the consumer fresh or processed food produced, traded or imported into or exported from our country.

It also conducts checks on materials and objects that come into contact with food. The purpose of the controls is to ensure the hygiene of the food and to protect the interests of the consumer.

These controls consist in particular of inspections of food businesses, control of the production system of businesses, sampling and analysis of food in its own or other food laboratories.

The inspection includes in particular the control of raw materials and additives, food during the production process of the finished products, compliance with the rules of good hygienic practice in the facilities of food businesses, mechanical equipment, health for the hygiene of the staff, determining and disinfection, rodent and insect control in packaging, storage and distribution and transportation of food.

Also, during the inspection, compliance with the technological parameters required by the current legislation by food businesses is checked, as well as the labeling of the food.

The control of the production system of healthy products includes the control of the critical control points during the production process, the control of the preventive measures applied by the companies to deal with the risks, the control of the processing and maintenance parameters applied by the companies (such as heating and cooling) to eliminate food hazards.

It also includes the control of the appropriate training of the company’s personnel so that they can properly respond to the requirements of the system of production of healthy products, as well as the control of the records documenting the observance of the system.

It participates in the competent bodies of the European Union and International Organizations for the formulation of decisions related to its competences, it ensures the adaptation and compliance with directives, decisions, regulations and recommendations, issued by the bodies of the European Union or other International Organizations in matters of its competence and is the link with the competent services of the European Union and other International Organizations in matters of food control and in the context of the system of immediate response to situations related to food safety.

It ensures the development of research programs related to its subject, cooperates with bodies with a related subject for this purpose and recommends proposals for the adoption of legislative or other measures in matters of its competence.

It collects, processes and keeps information, statistics and registers about the controls carried out by its services, food businesses and the objects of its competence.

It ensures the continuous information, training and education of its staff on technological developments and developments in new legislation, as well as the consumer in matters of food safety and quality.

E.F.E.T. can, within the framework of its responsibilities and the purpose of its operation and mission, by decision of its Administrative Board

Council, to subsidize or participate in programs, days, conferences and in general events of public services, legal entities of the public sector or the wider public sector, as defined by the written provisions, scientific societies, non-governmental organizations, unions or associations. This grant is exempt from any tax, fee and any other charge in favor of the State or third parties.

Exercises any other authority related to its purposes.

The Unified Food Control Agency (E.F.E.T.), as the dynamically developing service in terms of responsibilities and specifications, is the main Food Control Agency in Greece. From its establishment on January 13, 2000 until today, the Agency’s Board of Directors defined the organization’s development strategy, planning and proceeding to the completion of actions, which resulted in the creation and fulfillment of the conditions that set the basis for the organization of a modern organization, capable of successfully meeting its obligations.

These obligations, which create a huge range of dynamics for the Agency, but also constitute a huge responsibility towards Greek society, are the following:

  • Conducting systematic inspections in food businesses (food production, marketing and distribution businesses). During these inspections, it should be checked whether the rules of Good Hygienic Practice and Good Industrial Practice are met
  • Practice, as well as food hygiene assurance systems (HACCP system).
  • The systematic and seamless control of food during its handling, marketing and disposal.
  • The provision of technical assistance to the productive branches, either through the publication of hygiene guides for each professional branch or through the various seminars organized under the auspices of E.F.E.T. for the training of workers and professionals.
  • The treatment of the various nutritional crises, a particularly common phenomenon in recent years (e.g. emerging problems related to bovine spongiform encephalopathy, dioxins, acrylamide, aflatoxins and other mycotoxins, etc.),
  • the formation of Greek positions on food safety issues and their support in the EU,
  • the proposal for the formation of national legislation on food safety issues,
  • communicating with the consumer for the purpose of informing him and educating him on food safety issues,
  • the protection of the consumer from fraudulent or misleading commercial practices or from food adulteration,
  • the coordination of the prefectural services that exercise control in matters of food safety,
  • the installation of more effective (and preventive) assessment, monitoring and management systems of nutritional risks, with full adoption of the principles of risk analysis and assessment.
