Authorities in New York seized ancient artifacts worth at least $13,000,000 from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, according to “Artnews.”

The “New York Times” report talks about 27 ancient objects, worth more than 13 million dollars.

The items were recently seized by the Metropolitan Museum of Art at the behest of the Manhattan District Attorney. This is part of a wider effort to return the objects to their countries of origin, according to American media.

The Manhattan district attorney’s office has so far obtained six warrants to seize items from the museum this year.

In mid-July, along with federal agents, New York City authorities seized 21 allegedly stolen items, valued at more than $11,000,000.

Greek ancient artefacts of enormous value were confiscated from the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Among the most valuable items seized was a marble head of the goddess Athena, dating from around 200 BC.

Two statues, depicting the mythical Greek brothers Castor and Polydeuces, believed to have been made during the Roman Empire, were also seized, according to public documents obtained by the International Center for Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).

It is the largest seizure of objects at the Met Museum to date.

Some of the objects were allegedly once in the possession of people suspected of antiquities trafficking, such as Gianfranco Becchina, who ran a gallery in Switzerland for decades before being investigated for illegal dealings by the Italian government in 2001.
