A painting by the famous British-Nigerian rapper Skepta has been sold at auction for £81,900.

The work titled ‘Mama Goes to Market’ was sold at Sotheby’s contemporary art auction, ‘Contemporary Curated’.

The painting, which is the rapper’s first work, was originally painted by Skepta in 2020 over the course of a week. But later, she edited it again when she presented it at an event organized by French fashion house Givenchy in collaboration with graphic designer Chito.

Chito would put his signature on all the items that the guests brought with them, so the graphic designer’s symbol was added to the board, as well as that of his colleague Slawn and record producer and DJ Goldie.

The work depicts three African women — one of whom carries a child on her back. While the auctioneers had estimated that it would sell for up to £60,000, it eventually sold for £22,000 over the original estimate.

Although the buyer has not been made public, Skepta told the Financial Times that he hopes either American rapper, entrepreneur and producer Jay-Z or American stand-up comedian and actor Dave Chapelle will be the ones to take him home .
