Stefanos Tsitsipas had a bad day in his debut at the Mutua Madrid Open. The Brazilian, Thiago Monteiro played an exemplary match and the Greek champion was defeated by 2-0 sets and eliminated from No. 118 in the world ranking.

“Hard lesson” for Stefanos Tsitsipas at the 1000 ATP Madrid tournament. After participating in two straight finals (and one title win) the Greek champion was defeated 6-4, 6-4 by Thiago Monteiro and was eliminated by the -coming from the qualifiers- Brazilian tennis player in the “32” phase.

The Greek champion, who is in 7th place in the world ranking, entered the match “numb” and failed to impose his pace, a fact that his opponent took advantage of.

Monteiro broke in the third game and after taking a 3-1 lead, he held his serve without much difficulty and took the first set 6-4, after only 39 minutes of play.

The picture was similar in the second set, with the only difference, that the Brazilian “broke” Tsitsipas’ serve only in the first game. Subsequently, he managed to hold his serve – almost even making a second break in the fifth and ninth games – and reached the victory after 57 minutes of match.

Let us mention that this was the first defeat of Stefanos Tsitsipas in his debut in Madrid after 2018.
